Spirit Box Explained: How Ghost Box Sessions Actually Work
A spirit box gives you something to listen to in the moment: a fast scan across radio frequencies, producing fragments of static and stray broadcast content that investigators listen to for word-like responses. What it doesn't give you is anything to look back at afterward. Here's how the device actually works, what it can't do on its own, and why the recording you make of the session matters more than what you hear live.
1.0What a Spirit Box Actually Does
A spirit box, also called a ghost box, sweeps rapidly across AM or FM radio frequencies, landing on each one only long enough to grab a fraction of a second of whatever is broadcasting there before jumping to the next. The result is a stream of static punctuated by fragments of real stations: a syllable, a snippet of a song, a burst of talk radio. Investigators ask questions and listen for fragments that seem to respond.
There's no detection circuitry involved, no sensor reading anything paranormal. It's a radio scanning across real broadcast content faster than normal listening, and the pattern-matching happens entirely in the listener's ear in the moment.
2.0What It Can't Do
A spirit box has no memory of its own. Whatever it produces plays once, out loud, in the room, and is gone the instant it happens unless something else is recording it. It can't log a timestamp, it can't tell you whether a camera caught anything at that same second, and it gives you no way to go back and listen to a fragment more closely, slower, or as a visual spectrogram.
What it can't do: remember anything, correlate with any other instrument, or survive the session as evidence unless you separately record it.
3.0The Session Isn't the Evidence, the Recording Is
Because a spirit box session is live audio with nothing stored, the actual evidence from a session is whatever recording you happened to be running alongside it. That recording is what lets you slow a fragment down, view it as a spectrogram to separate speech-like content from scanning static, and check the exact second it happened against everything else running in the room at the same time.
4.0Reviewing and Correlating in SPECTER
SPECTER doesn't scan radio frequencies, that part is the spirit box's own job. What SPECTER adds is the layer underneath: recording the session, laying it out in the EVP Audio Lab as a waveform and spectrogram, and time-syncing every second of it to the same global timecode as your camera, thermal, and field sensor evidence.
- Record the whole session, not just what you noticed. A local mic or a phone connected as a remote mic captures the full audio, so a fragment you didn't quite catch live is still there to review.
- Spectrogram review. Frequency content over time makes it easier to separate a speech-like fragment from ordinary scanning static.
- Correlated timecode. A running HH:MM:SS:FF timecode ties every second of the session to your camera and sensor logs, so you can check whether anything else registered at that same moment.
